Although the calculations are different, generally speaking, off-page factors are weighed more heavily than on-page factors by the search engines.

Link Text – Simply put, search engines pay more attention to the text in a link that points to your site than they do to the actual site itself. For example, the text “Click Here” is much more relevant to a website about mobile phones than it is to a website about headstones.

Try to get links from other websites similar to yours. It is much easier to get a link back from a website within your market than it is to get a link from totally unrelated sites. For example, if your site is about headstones, and you exchange links with a site about dooming, the link will carry more weight in the eyes of the search engines.
Anchor Text – Anchor text is the text used in a link. For example, the anchor text of a link would read ” shade trees ” instead of just “click here.” This anchor text tells the search engine spiders what the linking page is about, and this, in turn, helps to improve your site’s ranking more importantly.
Part of a search-engine spider game plan is to get as many different types of links pointing to your site as humanly possible. This is definitely possible, and probably something you could do yourself. However, it is more professional and time-consuming to contact other webmasters and arranging link exchanges. If you want to be successful at search engine optimization, you’ll need to stay hours and hours every day, building link after link. No wonder you get massage and chiropractor emails saying, “I’ve been your friend for over seven years now.”
You can pay for backlinks. But you’ll only get the good ones from websites that already have a high page rank. And you don’t want ’em from irrelevant sites.
